iAchieve Sports students building their strength, speed and power

This term, as part of their unit of learning, Year 10 iAchieve students at Thuringowa State High School will be developing fitness components of strength, speed and power.

The students are fortunate to be training with qualified strength and conditioning coaches at CrossFit Townsville as they complete an Olympic weightlifting program.

iAchieve Sports Coordinator, Mr Mitchell Bebb said that through this program, the students will learn about the sport of weightlifting, effective and safe warm-ups and the weightlifting competition norms and scoring system.

"They will develop the knowledge and skills on how to perform a snatch, clean and jerk, front and back squat techniques as well as the importance of core, hip and shoulder stability in weightlifting," said Mr Bebb.

"Students will also be using the app Hudl to film each other's technique in the various lifts so they can analyse their own technique and identify areas for individual improvement.

"They will be required to apply criteria to make judgements about their own weightlifting performance for their assessment."

At the end of the unit, students will participate in a mock competition where they will have three attempts to perform each lift correctly. This competition will occur in a controlled and safe environment under supervision of qualified coaches at CrossFit Townsville.
