Thuringowa State High School opened in 1987, and has developed  strong traditions for academic excellence, sporting and cultural achievement and a vibrant community spirit.

We have dedicated and enthusiastic staff, committed to personalised education programs. Our staff is committed to providing students with learning opportunities in a safe, supportive and disciplined learning environment.

Thuringowa State High School has a wide network of support including guidance officers, youth support workers, chaplain, defence transition aide. engagement support team and school nurse.

We have excellent facilities including computer rooms, laptops, ipads, commercial standard kitchens, science laboratories, manual arts with the latest trades facilities, custom built theatre, gymnasium, basketball and tennis courts and a well resourced library.

Global Tropics Future Project is an award winning partnership between the Department of Education and Training and James Cook University, hosted and led by Thuringowa State High School. 

In 2018, Thuringowa State High School was the state winner of the Showcase Award for Excellence in Industry Partnership.  

The project engages students who have an aptitude for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  As a Queensland Virtual STEM Academy the program utilises an innovative, real time, online virtual platform to deliver enrichment and enhancement experiences to our students.

Another component of the Global Tropics Future Project, is the introduction of a new elective iSTEM program in Years 7, 9 and 10. This innovative subject is designed to extend and engage students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  It incorporates inquiry based learning and design thinking that will enhance students’ learning capabilities in all areas of their life. 

The STEM program has recent been honoured for their hard work with the 2019 CSIRO Indigenous STEM school award.  This is a national award, and we look forward to the opportunities to develop this further.

We have a strong presence in the inter-school sporting competitions with girls and boys teams in the various age groups in rugby union, rugby league, AFL, football (soccer), netball and basketball.

The iAchieve Sports Program is a three year program for Years 7, 8 & 9 students in which students are selected based on interview, previous sports achievement and performance in fitness testing.  The program aims to support athletes in achieving a balance between sport and the rest of the lives without compromising sporting goals or academic achievements.

The annual theatre restaurant is synonymous with Thuringowa State High School and those involved, carry lifelong memories of their participation.  The show is held in the school theatre.  The hospitality students under the supervision of their teachers provide patrons with a sit-down, three course, restaurant standard meal.  Students, staff, parents, community volunteers and past students dedicate many months of their time, energy and talents to ensure the success and tradition of theatre restaurant.
