What is Stars Foundation?

Stars supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and young women to attend school, complete Year 12 and move into full-time work or further study.

The program is based on strong, trusting relationships. The Stars Room is a warm, welcoming environment – where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and young women feel safe, nurtured, understood and inspired.

Our full-time Mentors provide a diverse range of activities to support young women to develop the self-esteem, confidence and life skills they need to successfully participate in school and transition into a positive and independent future.

How does the program work?

Stars operates on a full-time basis within our partner schools. Stars Mentors are based in a dedicated Stars Room within the schools, which means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and young women can access the intensive support they need, when and where they need it.

The Stars program offers personal development activities and experiences in many different areas, including sport, exercise, music, drama, art, cooking, and nutrition.

Students also take part in community, cultural and volunteering activities to build their life-skills and confidence and further develop their links to culture and community.

Stars has a strong focus on successful transitions from school into full-time work or further study and students are supported to explore a wide range of work and study opportunities while still at school.

At the completion of Year 12, our Transitions Managers provide intensive support to our young women so that they can move successfully into full-time employment, training or tertiary study.

The 'Stars Plan'

The Stars program focuses on the development of the whole person, with a strong emphasis on four key pillars of personal development through the 'Stars Plan':

  1. Healthy Lifestyles
  2. Wellbeing
  3. Education, Training and Employment
  4. Community, Culture and Leadership

Each of our students works closely with her Mentor to develop an individually tailored Stars Plan, which identifies her interests and strengths, and supports her to achieve her goals.

Our full-time Mentors are the key to the success of the Stars program. They are all experienced and respected people within their communities and act as exemplary role models for our Stars.
